Restoring your Trophy

Tips and Tricks

Remember boiling can damage your skull or bone.  Avoid excessive boiling.  It is always better to work a littler harder removing the flesh and meat than have a trophy that has been damaged.  And you can always boil a little more but you cannot reverse the damage.

The cap on the bottle has a small hole for venting.  This hole can also be used to apply the whitener.  First, take off the cap, remove the seal, and then replace the cap.  The bottle then can be used as a squirt bottle to apply the whitener especially in the hard to apply areas.  After applying whitener don't forget to replace the seal.

If you are not able to apply whitener right after boiling and cleaning then the skull or bone needs to be re-heated for the whitener application step.  This can be done by simply placing in near or boiling water for a short period of time (3-5) minutes.  Then remove, shake off excess water, apply whitener, and bag.

Rinsing the whitener (final step) with hot water seems to give better results.  Especially on those difficult areas that were blood stained, very greasy, or damaged.

A hot glue gun with a clear glue stick can be used to glue in teeth or tighten them if required.  Simply run a bead along the inside of the teeth.  After the glue has set trip the excess.  Clear silicone and Clear epoxy can also be used but cleanup can be a little more difficult.  Remember only to apply only on the inside of teeth down along the bone surface.

To protect sensitive teeth after whitening coat with nail polish.  Make sure to use a clear matt finish.  Bear, Cougar, and Bobcat skulls especially have very sensitive teeth that are easily susceptible to chipping and cracking.

When removing saran wrap and tape from horn or antlers keep sharp side of knife pointing away from horn or antler.  Cutting the tape off by cutting against horn or antler will leave a mark.

For those hard and stubborn displays that have stained and difficult areas apply extra whitener, double bag and place back in the hot water.  The hot water will keep the trophy warm along with pressing against the bone material.  Be sure you do not have a hole in your bags or the water will dilute the whiter causing you to re-apply.
